Elmer the Elephant

As you know, our calendar art this year featured Elmer the Elephant using water colours.  The journals, cards and calendars were distributed yesterday and looked fabulous.  Thank you for supporting the school fundraising and displaying school art at home.

Taniwha Narratives

We traced a taniwha shape, and then learnt how to use water colours to colour them.

We shared our taniwha narratives and read each others' stories,  and made comments about our buddies' writing.

Writing exemplar

After our trip to the Maritime Museum, everyone wrote about something special they had experienced.   Aasher's was chosen as an exemplar and displayed on the writing wall as his work showed us how to improve our own writing.  The display shows how Aasher checked the success criteria and then revisited his first draft to improve it.  Thank you, Aasher, your exemplar will help us all be better writers.

Who am I? challenge

Everyone wrote a description about themselves.  The descriptions were organised into three sentences or 'clues'.  At the end, we had to decide who we thought the person was.  Sometimes the clues were easy to follow and we guessed correctly, sometimes the clues were too vague (not clear enough for the reader to follow) and we guessed incorrectly.  Either way, everyone has enjoyed reading them at SSR time.

Chrome books

While Year 6 was at Camp Raglan, Room 11 lent us 21 Chromes books so that we could all u use one at the same time! We used them to write a short, colour coded narrative and do some ARBs about fish and birds.  Thank you, room 11!

Learning about Chrome books

Mrs Nicol came our class to teach us more ways we could use our Chrome books.  We learned how to use Google Drive to find our own folder inside the Room 19 folder so we could save our work.  We learned to use different fonts, colours and shapes in our computer writing.

Next week we will make posters for our Butterfly Garden using these skills.

Sounds of Summer poems

In Ready, Steady, Go we have been learning to use our senses.  We wrote a poem about Summer just using our sense of hearing.   We found there are hundreds of sounds that you can hear in Summer. We will read these poems again in cold, wet, rainy winter so we can remember what our hot, sunny Summer was like.

Class photo shoot

It has taken a long t-i-m-e for us to be able to take a class photo, as we waited until everyone was at school on the same day.

Can you pick out the really wild students - of course, we have to keep them in a cage!

Here we all are, looking super smart in our full school uniform.

Here is our class treaty - we wrote it together as a class and then everyone signed it to show that we had read it, understood it and promised to keep it true.  We used feather quills to sign it, just like the people did in 1840 when they signed the Treaty of Waitangi.

Character maps

In Writing and reading, we use mind maps to display our understanding, not just worksheets as in Year 2.  Our work has gone up a level!  Here we are making a character map about a good friend.  Great focus, Room 19!

Summer holiday recounts

On the very first week of term, we wrote a story about our Summer holidays.  When they were finished, we illustrated them with a picture that matched the text.  We enjoyed reading them with a buddy.  You can read them all in the Writing page.

Valentine cards

We were learning about symbols and how they say a message without words - we looked at road signs and hand gestures, like stop or come here.  The heart shape means love all around the world in all kinds of languages.  

We made a Valentine card to give to someone special we love, and wrote a Valentine's poem inside.  As is the tradition, we did not write our names inside so no one will ever know who sent them.  Can you guess who is holding their cards?  Look on the VISUAL ART page for more mystery writers.
