Lolly Butterflies for the CBS Carnival

Every class was responsible for making a particular treat for the carnival.  Room 19 made lolly butterflies.  After we had spent so much time and effort making them, many class members bought one in the Willy Wonka Sweet Factory on carnival day - Mrs Bear even bought two!

First we wriggled into surgical gloves, and then we choose 20 lollies - there were HUNDREDS to choose from!

It was important to make the butterfly wings symmetrical so we chose two of each colour and grouped them in two identical piles.

To make the wings, we carefully placed one half of the lollies in one corner of the bag, and the others in the opposite corner.   

We folded the bag in half and then clipped on a peg for the body.  We curled pipe cleaners to make antennae.  Zinay's Grandma helped us glue sparkly pompoms and googly eyes on the body with a hot glue gun.

When we had used up all the sweets, we counted how many lolly butterflies we had made - 88!  Then we calculated how much money we would make if we sold each one for $2.  Different people used different strategies to work out the correct answer - $176.

Mr Cuddles recovering well

We are delighted to report that Mr Cuddles has recovered well from surgery to repair extensive injuries to his left shoulder and brain.  The medical team worked tirelessly for four sessions before school to complete the surgery.  Mr Cuddles has recovered sufficiently to leave ICU (Intensive Care Unit) to return to light duties in the classroom library.  A big thank you to the medical team.

Room 19 had a little lamb, little lamb

We were lucky enough to have a surprise visit from not one, by two, little lambs.  They were both very well behaved, and even wore nappies in case to an embarrassing accident.

Leadership Week

During Leadership Week, some of the school leaders came to talk to us, and answer our questions, about what it meant to be a school leader at Cockle Bay.  After they left, we brainstormed the main facts we had learnt and Mrs Bear wrote them on the whiteboard.

Giraffes Magic Show

The Giraffes read the trilogy, Moutaschio’s Best Magic Trick, Magic Show Review, and Magic Tricks.  As part of our reading contract,  everyone practiced one magic trick to perform at our magic show on the last day of term.  We also had to make a poster using Printshop 2 to advertise our show, and displayed it in Room 1, 2 and 18 so that all the Weka students had a chance to attend.  Every member had a ticket as they arrived, and every ticket holder received complimentary popcorn, so we had to design tickets and make popcorn as well.

We had to cut out 100 tickets altogether!

Groups are named!

We have three group tables in Room 19, and at last each one has a name.  Each group table brainstormed some names and then voted on their favourite.  Let me introduce the Wonderful Wekas, the Marvellous Meerkats and the Delightful Dragonflies.  As you can see, Hoover helped with the voting.

Class councillors - voting

After lunch, everyone had a secret vote to decide who they thought would make the best councillor. The votes were stored in a sealed box and counted when all votes had been made.

On Monday, Mrs Bear announced the results:  Daniel got 5 votes and will be Class Councillor and Bianca got 3 votes and will be Deputy Class Councillor.  Congratulations to everyone who took part in the speeches and voting.  Congratulations also to Bianca and Daniel, who I'm sure will do a great job this year.

Class Councillor speeches

In Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 every class selects two class councillors who run class meetings and attend class councillor meetings with Mr Lomas and Mrs Gartland, where they represent the class.  They give their class report and bring back information to the class.

We brainstormed the characteristics of a good class councillor, and then everyone wrote a speech explaining how they would be an excellent class councillor.  When we had finished writing and editing the speeches, people who wanted to be considered gave their speech to the class.  All those people listening were a very respectful audience, listening carefully and clapping at the end.

Wet Play

The weather has been hot and fine in the main, but we had our first wet play when it was raining at lunchtime.  It made a nice change playing Lego, Mobilo and Konnect with our classmates, instead of running on the field or going on the playground.
