Giraffes Magic Show

The Giraffes read the trilogy, Moutaschio’s Best Magic Trick, Magic Show Review, and Magic Tricks.  As part of our reading contract,  everyone practiced one magic trick to perform at our magic show on the last day of term.  We also had to make a poster using Printshop 2 to advertise our show, and displayed it in Room 1, 2 and 18 so that all the Weka students had a chance to attend.  Every member had a ticket as they arrived, and every ticket holder received complimentary popcorn, so we had to design tickets and make popcorn as well.

All the magicians and the MC took at bow at the end.
Amber called for a member of the audience to help her.

The show attracted a capacity audience.
We had to cut out 100 tickets altogether!

Term 2 finished with a bang!

We made fizz bombs to end Term 2 with a bang!  First everyone wrote their own set of procedures to make a fizz bomb and numbered,  labelled diagrams.  When our written procedures were finished, we worked with a buddy.  We had to follow each step in the right sequence.  We had to work carefully to divide the film canister into thirds so that we could pour water up to the one third mark.  Next we had to break the Alka Seltzer tablet into quarters.  We found it was easier to first break it in half, and then break the half into half again, so that we ended up with four quarters.  It was important to add the tablet to the water outside, and very quickly snap the lid on tightly so no gas could escape.  To start with, we had a couple to explosions in the classroom when we weren't quick enough!
Shaun and Kylie marked their film cannister carefully into thirds; then Shaun snapped the tablet into quarters.
We let our fizz bombs explode outside; it was funny waiting because you couldn't predict accurately when they would explode.  We had enough materials left over to make more with the Junior Science Club at lunchtime - by then, we were experts!

Matariki kites and telescopes

When we read the book, Matariki, we found that people traditionally make kites at this time.  We made our own kites and decorated them in traditional Maori colours of red and black.  Once they were finished we had to wait patiently for the field to open so we could test our kites.  Eventually the rain stopped, the sun and wind dried the field . . . and we were off!  We had to run as fast as we could to make a slip stream for our kites to fly in.

The telescopes worked best when we looked up towards the light.

The whole class read the book, Matariki.  We compared the things we do at Matariki and New Year; some reading groups used Venn diagrams and some groups used Tcharts to make their comparisons.  We made the constellation of the Seven Sisters on black paper using a drawing pin when we made our telescopes.  Next we researched a suitable Maori design to decorate our telescopes online. When they were finally finished, we looked through our telescopes to see what we could see.

PPPs

On Wednesday 29 June, Year 3 had PPPs.  All the students did a very thorough presentation to their family members.  Thank you to all the parents who came along and made the day a success.

As mentioned on the night, if you have any queries or concerns, please contact Mrs Bear to arrange a meeting time or email 'conversation' if more convenient.

Our work bench

We have set up a work bench in Room 19 with a range of screw drivers where we can dismantle electrical equipment to see what is inside and how it may work.  So far, we have worked on electric kettles, toasters, lap tops and mobile phones.
UN-WANTED ELECTRICAL ITEMS OR PHONES ARE ALWAYS WANTED -
PLEASE DONATE THEM TO ROOM 19 IF YOU NO LONGER NEED THEM.
