Checking for harmful UV light rays

Before we went on the waterslide, we checked outside for harmful UV light rays which can burn and damaged your skin.
Everyone made a bracelet with pipecleaners and threaded ten UV beads on to it.  We checked them in the shade and the V beads stayed white.
Then we exposed them to the sunlight on the junior court, and found the beads turned different colours, showing the presence of UV rays.

Next we placed some UV beads in a plastic bag and smeared the outside of the bag with 30+ sunscreen.  When we put the bag in the sun, we saw that the beads only coloured a little, which told us that most of the UV rays were blocked by the sunscreen.  Next time we will use 50+ sunscreen to see if all the UV rays are blocked.  After that Mrs Bear gave everyone some sunscreen to rub on to protect their skin on the water slide.
